Authorized by the Platinum Coin Act of 1996, the one-ounce American Platinum Eagle contains .9995 fine platinum — the purest composition in the Eagle bullion family. The obverse features John Mercanti's close-up Statue of Liberty portrait, exclusive to the platinum series. What makes the proof series especially collectible is its annually rotating reverse designs: thematic programs have included Vistas of Liberty (1998-2002), Foundations of Democracy (2006-2008), and Preamble to the Constitution (2009-2014), with each new reverse creating a distinct collectible. The bullion version maintains Thomas D. Rogers Sr.'s soaring eagle reverse throughout.
