The 1998 American Eagle Fifty Dollar Platinum is a United States platinum coin from the American Eagle Fifty Dollar Platinum 1997 to Date series. The obverse features the Statue of Liberty facing forward, while the reverse displays an eagle soaring over the sunrise. Designed by John M. Mercanti (obverse) / Thomas D. Rogers Sr. (reverse). Struck in 99.95% platinum, weighing 15.56 grams, 27 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The half-ounce American Platinum Eagle contains 1/2 troy ounce of .9995 fine platinum. Fractional platinum eagles were produced from 1997 to 2008 in bullion format, making them a limited-production series. Fractional platinum eagles were discontinued after 2008 in bullion format, making earlier issues increasingly sought after. Proof versions were also produced.
