The obverse features the Statue of Liberty facing forward, while the reverse displays an eagle soaring over the sunrise. Designed by John M. Mercanti (obverse) / Thomas D. Rogers Sr. (reverse). Struck in 99.95% platinum, weighing 15.56 grams, 27 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The half-ounce American Platinum Eagle contains 1/2 troy ounce of .9995 fine platinum. Fractional platinum eagles were produced from 1997 to 2008 in bullion format, making them a limited-production series. Fractional platinum eagles were discontinued after 2008 in bullion format, making earlier issues increasingly sought after. Proof versions were also produced.
