Description

Light spread toward the West on the D of GOD, the middle of the queue, the hair curl above the ear, and the upper eyelid defines VDDO-004 on the 2023 American Women Quarter, one of the newest varieties in the modern quarter catalog. Die markers tracked under provisional codes UVC-???? and DMR-00? — the question marks indicating that permanent codes had not yet been assigned at the time of cataloging — document three stages: Stage A with both obverse and reverse at Early Die State, Stage B at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). The American Women Quarter program, running from 2022 through 2025, features distinguished American women on the reverse with a Laura Gardin Fraser-inspired George Washington portrait on the obverse. The queue — Washington's tied-back hair — and the hair curl above the ear provide design elements specific to this updated obverse portrait that serve as doubling diagnostic zones. Washington's upper eyelid showing westward spread echoes the classic eyelid doubling found on Lincoln cent DDOs, providing a familiar diagnostic framework for collectors transitioning from cent to quarter variety hunting. Cataloged by VarietyVista, VDDO-004 documents hub doubling on one of the most recently introduced coin designs in the U.S. series, demonstrating that modern manufacturing still produces attributable doubled die varieties.
