2018 (P) Block Island National Wildlife Refuge Quarter - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

2018-P RI WDDR-005 is a doubled die reverse on the 2018-P Block Island National Wildlife Refuge quarter (Rhode Island) in the America the Beautiful series, cataloged by the Wexler team. Minor doubling lies beneath the end of the left wing's third feather above the ground and continues to the underside of the right wing's bottom feather. Obverse Stage A has long gouges low inside the D of GOD and left of the W of WE. Stage B shows dozens of large gouges across the obverse, among them a large gouge right of the D's base in GOD, a large gouge heading NW from the left center of the P mintmark, and a cluster of large gouges under the B of LIBERTY. Obverse Stage C matches Stage B. Reverse Stage A has a thin crack along the bird's back and its top feather. On Stage B a small chip has formed on that crack along the top feather, and dozens of large gouges appear across the reverse, including a single large gouge SSE of the bird's eye, a cluster of large gouges around the UM of UNUM and a large gouge in the L of BLOCK. On Stage C a die break shows on the bird's back below its top feather, and three dots (small round gouges) now sit SSE of the eye in a triangle. George W. Powell, Jr. submitted the variety.
