Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2018-P 25¢ RI WDDR-004, this Philadelphia Block Island National Park quarter from the America the Beautiful series shows minor doubling under the end of the third feather above the ground on the bird's left wing. Three die stages are documented on both sides. Obverse Stage A has no significant markers. Stage B develops a die chip on the base of the bust north of the R in QUARTER. Stage C matches Stage B. On the reverse, Stage A has no significant markers. Stage B develops a die break under the top feather on the bird's back. Stage C intensifies with a die break on the bird's shoulder and a die crack extending east to the head, plus a large die gouge below the right side of the K in BLOCK that may also appear on earlier stages. The progressive reverse deterioration from a single feather break to a shoulder break with crack extension documents advancing die failure. Block Island was the final Rhode Island entry in the America the Beautiful program, and doubled die varieties from these later ATB quarters are less commonly reported than those from State Quarters, adding collector interest.
