1862 Indian Head Cent Doubled Die Reverse FS-801 Snow-5

Description

A doubled die reverse is visible on this 1862 Indian Head cent. A doubled die occurs when a working die receives a second, misaligned impression from the hub during the die-making process, creating doubled design elements on all coins struck from that die. In this case, doubling can be seen in the leaves and the wreath. This variety is cataloged as FS-801 and Snow-5. The 1862 Indian Head cent was struck during the Civil War when cent hoarding was rampant. Dies were used well beyond their normal lifespan, making die deterioration varieties relatively common for this year.
