2013P-1DER-007T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Found by David Strzalkowski, this Trail Dies-cataloged Lincoln Shield Cent from the Philadelphia Mint documents two distinct die states. Die markers at Stage A: obverse at EDS with none noted; reverse at EDS with none noted. Stage C: obverse at LDS with a die crack formed from the rim in front of the word WE down into Lincoln's hair; reverse at LDS with a die crack on the top left edge of the shield over the letters PLU of PLURIBUS. The jump from clean EDS surfaces to multiple die cracks at LDS documents the full deterioration arc of this die pair. Trail die effects arise from partial contact between die faces during press operation. The Shield reverse, introduced in 2010 with its union shield design and E PLURIBUS UNUM scroll, was struck in copper-plated zinc at 2.5 grams and 19.05 mm. The rim-to-hair obverse crack and shield-to-inscription reverse crack indicate structural failure patterns.
