Description

Recorded as a trail die obverse rather than the more commonly cataloged trail die reverse, this 2013 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent variety was found by Joe Koelling. Die markers for Stage B place the obverse at mid die state with a die chip in Lincoln’s forehead, while the reverse at mid die state shows a die crack seen in the upper left edge of the shield. Trail die obverse varieties (designated DEO rather than DER) indicate that the obverse die received the transferred impression, an occurrence that is documented less frequently than reverse trail dies and adds to this variety’s interest. The forehead die chip on the obverse and shield-edge die crack on the reverse provide reliable secondary attribution points for confirming the die pair identity. The Lincoln Shield Cent’s bold obverse portrait, largely unchanged from Victor David Brenner’s original 1909 design, offers a familiar canvas for trail die impressions, and the geometric shield reverse provides contrasting reference lines that help researchers pinpoint the exact nature of any transferred design elements.
