Description

Found by Ronald Traino on the 2013 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent, this trail die obverse shows trail lines on the date and on the Y of LIBERTY, with the offset direction at approximately 25 degrees. In Stage A (EDS), the obverse displays light northwest-to-southeast die scratches in front of the lips, chin, and neck. The reverse is EDS with light die scratches running northeast from the top of the shield. Trail die varieties occur when the die shifts slightly between impressions, producing faint offset traces of the design elements. The approximate 25-degree offset direction on this variety provides a useful diagnostic for attribution, distinguishing it from other trail die listings on the 2013 cent. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets, the Lincoln Shield Cent continues the obverse portrait introduced by Victor David Brenner in 1909. Early die state specimens like this Stage A example preserve the sharpest trail impressions before progressive wear softens the effect.
