2013P-5DER-006T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Discovered by Jim Karnes on the 2013 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, this trail die reverse variety preserves evidence of a secondary die impression transferred during die manufacture. Trail dies occur when a working hub leaves a faint, misaligned ghost image alongside the primary impression, creating subtle doubling that differs mechanically from hub doubling. Cataloged as 2013P-5DER-006T in the Jefferson Nickels Return to Monticello 2006 to Date series, this variety is documented at Stage B with both obverse and reverse in mid-die state and no prominent die markers noted on either side. The absence of distinctive markers means attribution relies on the trail die impression itself rather than ancillary die damage. The Return to Monticello reverse, reintroduced in 2006 after the Westward Journey series, restored Felix Schlag's original Monticello design with refinements by Jamie Franki. Trail die varieties on modern Jefferson Nickels demonstrate that even with contemporary die production technology, secondary impressions from the hubbing process continue to appear in the coinage supply.
