Description

Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling on this 2013 Jefferson Nickel shows along the top of the right side of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. The tilted hub mechanism occurs when the hub is angled slightly relative to the die during impression, creating doubling that varies in direction and intensity depending on each design element's distance from the tilt axis. On the Monticello reverse, the center door frame's geometric straight lines make even minor displacement immediately apparent, and the location above the steps concentrates the visible effect in an area collectors can examine efficiently. Die markers on the obverse include a small die gouge below the B of LIBERTY. On the reverse, a small die gouge dot appears to the left of the upper portion of M in MONTICELLO, and a second small die gouge dot sits to the right of the right base of the building. Cross-referenced as 2013 WDDR-004 in the Wexler catalog. Monticello's detailed architecture, with its portico, windows, and stepped entrance, continues to yield Class VIII tilted hub varieties that reward careful examination of Jefferson Nickel production.
