2013 (P) Jefferson Nickel - P-5DER-005WSTA Trail Die Reverse

Description

Wavy steps, more familiar from Lincoln cent reverses, appear here on a Jefferson nickel. On 2013P-5DER-005WSTA strong trails cover every device on the lower half of the reverse, growing stronger from right to left, and where they cross Monticello's stairs the steps take on a rippled outline. All run at 180°, straight down the coin. In the code, 2013P is date and mint, 5 the nickel, DER a reverse design extension, 005 the file and WST wavy steps with trails; the entry does not explain the final A. TrailDies shows a middle stage A, without obverse flow lines, and a late stage B; both have a small gouge beside the S in TRUST and a small dent above the last U of PLURIBUS. Jim Karnes found stage A and G. Daniels stage B. Trails are generally put down to the die being polished with a rotary buff, though some credit die movement against the hub.
