2013P-5DER-005WSTA Trail Die Reverse
Error
Description
Strong trail lines on all devices on the bottom half of the reverse die mark this Trail Dies-cataloged 2013-P Jefferson Nickel from the Philadelphia Mint, with Stage B found by G. Daniels and Stage A found by Jim Karnes. Die markers at Stage A: obverse at MDS with a small die gouge next to the S in TRUST and an absence of flow lines; reverse at MDS with a small die dent above the last U in PLURIBUS. The noted absence of flow lines at Stage A is diagnostically significant, as flow lines typically develop through repeated striking. Trail die errors arise from partial contact between die faces during press operation. Part of the Jefferson Nickels Return to Monticello series introduced in 2006, featuring Jamie Franki's updated Monticello reverse. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the widespread trail lines across the bottom half of the reverse indicate a substantial offset contact event.
