Description
2013P-5DER-001T is TrailDies' file 001 among 2013 Philadelphia nickel reverses with trails; the code is date and mint, a 5 for the coin's denomination, DER (a reverse design extension), the file number and T, which stands for trails. The lines come from the bottoms of NITED in UNITED and run at 300°, west-northwest, toward the upper left. A small cluster of gouges below WE marks the obverse of the middle-die-state coin described, and the reverse has a gouge at the lower right of the first O in MONTICELLO. Karen Johnson found it. Polishing of the die with a rotary buff is the explanation most specialists accept, though a minority attribute trails to the die moving against the hub.
