Description
The trails on 2011P-1DEO-013T rise from the final pair of digits in the date, the 11, and run at 350°, slightly west of north. Read as a code, 2011P gives the year and Philadelphia mint, 1 the one-cent denomination, DEO the obverse design extension, 013 the file and T the trails. The middle-die-state coin TrailDies describes has a die crack on Lincoln's forehead. Its reverse carries two cracks: one leaving the right top of the shield's edge and crossing into the field, the other in the field next to the shield's left point. James Mitchell found the die. Trails are usually laid to a rotary buff used to polish the die, though some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
Die Markers
- Stage “B“, obverse is MDS – a die crack is seen on Lincoln’s forehead.
- Reverse is MDS – a die crack is seen along the right top of the shield’s edge, traveling into the field. Another die crack is seen in the field adjacent to the left point of the shield.
