Description
On 2011P-1DEO-011T, a 2011 Philadelphia cent obverse, the trails leave the tops of the letters of LIBERTY and point almost straight up, at 355°. TrailDies' code is built from the date and mint (2011P), the cent (1), an obverse design extension (DEO), file 011 and T for trails. TrailDies likens it to its file 015 for the same year, so the die markers are the way to tell them apart: a crack through the upper hair on the obverse, and on the Union Shield reverse a break at the upper left edge of the shield and scratches through UNITED. Frank Baumann found the die. Trails are generally attributed to the die being polished with a rotary buff; some attribute them to die-to-hub movement instead.
