Description
TrailDies' 2011P-1DEO-010T has lines running from the bottoms of the letters in LIBERTY at 170°, slightly east of due south. That code can be read left to right: 2011 and P (date, Philadelphia), 1 (one cent), DEO (design extension, obverse), 010 (the file) and T (trails). On TrailDies' compass, 000° points to the top of the coin and bearings grow clockwise, so 170° falls just short of straight down. The coin described is at a middle die state; TrailDies found no marker on the obverse, and on the reverse a die crack traces the shield's upper left border. Steven Bingham found the die. Trails are usually thought to come from polishing the die with a rotary buff, while some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
