2011 (P) Lincoln Shield Cent - P-1DEO-009T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Trails on 2011P-1DEO-009T come from the E of WE and the TR of TRUST and head at 100°, a touch south of due east, toward the right edge of the coin. The number decodes as year 2011 with mint P, denomination 1 (cent), DEO for an extended obverse design, file 009, and T for trails. TrailDies' middle-die-state coin has a gouge between WE and TRUST and die scratches in front of Lincoln's face, his bow tie and the date; a reverse crack runs along the top of the shield's left side and on to the top right. Louis Schaeffer found the die. Trails are commonly explained as the work of a rotary tool used to polish the die; some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
