Description

Discovered by Tom Steinbaugh, the 2011P-1DEO-006T trail die obverse on the Philadelphia Lincoln Shield Cent documents hubbing displacement on one of the early issues bearing Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse, introduced in 2010. Die markers at Stage B place both sides at mid-die state: the obverse shows no notable markers, while the reverse carries a small die chip on the left upper edge of the shield. This shield-edge chip provides a precise attribution point tied to the new design's heraldic element — a feature unavailable during the prior Memorial Cent era. Six cataloged trail die obverses for the 2011 Philadelphia cent demonstrates that researchers quickly applied trail die methodology from the Memorial years to the new Shield series. Steinbaugh's discovery confirmed that hubbing processes producing trail die effects continued seamlessly across the design transition, reflecting equipment characteristics rather than the specific design being impressed. The 2011-P Shield Cent was produced in large quantities, ensuring ample material for variety examination.
