Description
2011P-1DEO-003T is a dual-direction die: TrailDies sees lines on the BERT of LIBERTY running both up, at 000° (north, toward the rim above), and down, at 180° (south). Its code is built from the year and mint (2011P), the denomination (1, a cent), the side and kind of feature (DEO, obverse design extension), the file (003) and T, for trails. On the coin described, struck at a middle die state, a crack leaves the bust's lower right corner and reaches the rim, and the reverse has a die chip on the left edge of the shield. George dePozsgay found the die. Die polishing with a rotary tool is the explanation usually offered for trails; some instead put them down to the die moving against the hub.
