2011-1DER-011T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Discovered by Louis Schaeffer, this trail die reverse was identified on the 2011 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield cent, the third year of the Shield reverse introduced in 2010. Faint trail lines are visible on EPU and lightly off the outer edge of IT in UNITED, with the offset direction at 030 degrees. The documented die state is Stage B, placing both obverse and reverse at mid-die state. The obverse at this stage appears to carry a minor doubled die: TY of LIBERTY shows light distortion and thickness, and 20 of the date exhibits very light extra thickness. This possible DDO on the same die adds interest beyond the trail die attribution. The reverse displays a crack and die break on the upper left shield edge, with a crack branching southwest toward the L in E PLURIBUS UNUM. The shield design's geometric lines provide clear reference points for measuring trail die offset angles. The combination of a trail die reverse with a potentially doubled obverse on the same die pair is noteworthy for researchers documenting both trail die and hub-doubling phenomena on Shield cent production.
