2009 (D) Lincoln Cent - Formative Years - D(FY)-1DER-003T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Trails run widely across the reverse of 2009D(FY)-1DER-003T: from beneath NE (in ONE) and ENT (in CENT), and also from UNITED, the E of EPU and the RI of PLURIBUS. Their offset is 160°, south-southeast. Decoded, the number reads 2009D (Denver, 2009), (FY) Formative Years design, 1 for a cent, DER for the reverse, file 003, T. The early-die-state coin has a crack in Lincoln's hair beneath GOD on the obverse; the reverse has cracks in the right boot and left shoulder of the seated figure and a gouge in the field under the R of AMERICA. Like 2009D(FY)-1DER-002T, it was found by Sarah Romero of Colorado. Polishing of the die with a rotary buff is the usual explanation, while a smaller camp suggests the die moved against the hub.

Die Markers

• Stage “A”, obverse is EDS – a die crack is seen on Lincoln’s hair below the word GOD.
• Reverse is EDS – die cracks are seen in the right boot and the left shoulder.
• Also seen is a die gouge in the the field below R of AMERICA.
