2004P-5DEO-002T Trail Die Obverse
Error
Description
Found by Tanaka Davis and cataloged by Trail Dies, the 2004P-5DEO-002T represents the second documented trail die obverse on the 2004 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel featuring the Peace Medal reverse from the Westward Journey series. Trail dies are a distinctive class of die variety produced when a coin is struck slightly off-center or when a secondary impression from the die's edge or a neighboring die element leaves faint, ghost-like traces of the design displaced from its normal position. These trail lines typically appear as thin, raised linear remnants of design elements shifted in a consistent direction, creating a subtle shadow effect across the affected area. The 2004 Westward Journey nickels marked a historic departure from the long-standing Felix Schlag Monticello reverse, introducing two new designs for that year: the Peace Medal and the Keelboat. The obverse retained a modified version of Schlag's 1938 Jefferson portrait, and it is this obverse die that produced the trail die effect documented here. Philadelphia Mint production of these commemorative-style circulation nickels was substantial, as collector interest drove demand well beyond normal levels. The "T" suffix in the catalog number confirms the trail die classification, distinguishing it from other die variety types. Trail die varieties require careful examination under magnification to detect the faint displaced design traces, and their study contributes to understanding die production tolerances and alignment precision at modern mint facilities. Collectors of Westward Journey varieties find trail dies a compelling addition to their sets, as they document production anomalies during one of the most significant design changes in nickel history.
