Description

First documented typical die clash for the 2000 Jefferson nickel, TDC-5C-2000-01 captures the ghost impressions left when obverse and reverse dies struck each other without an intervening planchet during a coining press malfunction. In a typical die clash event, the press cycle fires normally but no planchet has been fed between the dies, causing the raised design elements of each die to hammer directly into the opposing die's surface. The resulting incuse impressions on each die then transfer as faint raised marks on every subsequent coin struck until the die is replaced or the clash evidence wears away through continued use. Felix Schlag's Jefferson portrait and Monticello reverse — the design pairing that served the nickel denomination from 1938 through 2003 — produce a characteristic clash pattern where elements of Jefferson's jaw and collar appear as ghost lines on the reverse field, while Monticello's architectural features may ghost onto the obverse near the portrait. Philadelphia struck approximately 846.2 million nickels in 2000, a high-volume production year where automated high-speed presses occasionally experienced feed failures that permitted die-on-die contact. The MadDieClashes attribution service cataloged this as the first identified clash event for the 2000 Philadelphia nickel, distinguishing it from subsequent clashes that may show different transferred elements or intensity levels. Detection requires oblique fiber-optic lighting at 5-10x magnification, angled to cast shadows along the shallow raised clash marks that would otherwise blend into the surrounding field under direct illumination. The open areas of the obverse field around Jefferson's portrait and the reverse field around Monticello provide the best viewing zones where ghost impressions contrast against the flat background.
