1995D-1DER-009T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Found by Joshua Haynes, this ninth documented trail die variety for the 1995-D Lincoln Memorial Cent displays moderate trail lines extending from the tops of the E PLURIBUS UNUM letters, with an additional trail line from the bottom of the last S in STATES. Trail dies result from a misaligned die that contacts the planchet at an incorrect angle or position during the striking process, leaving faint ghost impressions of design elements displaced from their proper location. The offset angle of 330 degrees places these trail impressions in the upper-left quadrant relative to the normal design orientation. Die markers at Stage B mid-die state include small die gouges around the R of LIBERTY on the obverse and a die scratch between the C and A of AMERICA on the reverse. The 1995-D cent was struck at the Denver Mint during a year when Philadelphia's famous DDO-001 drove enormous collector interest in the entire 1995 cent series. Trail die varieties represent a distinct error mechanism from doubled dies — rather than a hubbing anomaly, the trail results from the die-to-planchet interaction during the actual striking event.
