1995-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1995-D 1-cent WDDO-001 and multiply cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-V and Coppercoins 1995D-1DO-001, this Class V doubled die obverse variety appears on a 1995-D Lincoln Memorial cent struck at the Denver Mint. The 1995 cent is composed of copper-plated zinc, weighing 2.5 grams with a 19 mm diameter. The Class V doubling mechanism involves a clockwise pivot from a point at approximately 12 o'clock, creating a spread that increases with angular distance from the pivot point. On WDDO-001, this CW spread is visible on the date, the mint mark, the front folds of the vest, and the letters of LIBERTY. The pivot near 12 o'clock means that design elements at the bottom of the die (the date and lower bust area) display the widest spread, while elements near the top show progressively less displacement. Obverse die markers include a die gouge southeast of the mint mark and a small die gouge just northwest of the N of IN. The reverse carries a die gouge above the Memorial roof south-southeast of the S in PLURIBUS. The triple cross-referencing across CONECA, Coppercoins, and Wexler catalog systems provides robust independent verification of this variety's legitimacy and significance. As WDDO-001 for the 1995-D date, this is considered the primary doubled die obverse variety for this date-mint combination. The 1995 date is particularly notable in Lincoln cent variety collecting because the 1995 Philadelphia Mint DDO (the famous doubled die on IN GOD WE TRUST) generated enormous public interest in Lincoln cent varieties, spurring increased searching of both P and D mint production from that year.
