Description
1995D-1DER-002WS leans to the right: fluting lines enter the stylobate moderately under columns 10, 11 and 12, and moderate bending of the steps under columns 5 to 8 is heaviest on the right side. TrailDies' heading gives 180°, due south. The term wavy steps refers to trails passing over the Memorial's stairs and warping them. In the code, 1995D is the year and Denver mint, 1 the denomination, DER a reverse design extension and 002 the file; WS names the wavy-step type. The stage B coin has two die gouges around the mint mark, a small gouge below the right-hand shrubs at the base, and another in the right shrub. The lines are usually blamed on die polishing with a rotary tool, though a minority links them to die and hub moving against each other.
