1987 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-009WST Trail Die Reverse

Description

1987D-1DER-009WST carries both wavy steps and trails, the two halves of its WST suffix. Lines run down into the stylobate below columns 1, 2 and 3 on the left and 11 and 12 on the right, and into the stairs under columns 5 to 8, which is what gives the steps their bent look. More trails leave the bottoms of the E and N in CENT. The offset is 190°, a little west of due south. The rest of the code covers the 1987 Denver date, the denomination digit, DER for the reverse and file 009. TrailDies' coin is an early die state (stage A), with a small gouge in the open field over the ER of LIBERTY and die damage in bay 5 of the Memorial. Richard Cooper found the die. Trails and wavy steps are usually attributed to polishing of the die with a rotary tool, though some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
