1987-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-009

Description

Ninth in the thirteen-variety RPM census for the 1987-D Lincoln Memorial cent, RPM-009 is cataloged as UVC-1021 and DMR-010 and follows the three-stage documentation model with Stage A at early die state, Stage B at mid-die state, and Stage C at late die state. The displacement direction of the secondary mint mark punch is unspecified, placing RPM-009 among several varieties in the 1987-D series where the repunching offset does not resolve into a clear cardinal or intercardinal direction. Unspecified displacement can result from a very slight offset, a nearly in-place secondary impression that produces thickness rather than visible separation, or rotational rather than translational misalignment of the punch. Cherry-pickers seeking this variety must look for the subtlest evidence of doubling in and around the D mint mark — perhaps a slight thickening on one side, faint notching at the serifs, or a trace shadow just inside the letter's bowl.
