1987-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002
ErrorDescription
Attributed by the Wexler team and cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-V and Coppercoins 1987D-1DO-002, WDDO-002 on the 1987-D Lincoln Memorial cent displays a clockwise spread from a pivot at approximately the 3:00 position, with the doubling visible on LIBERTY. The Class V (pivoted hub doubling) classification indicates the working die rotated around a fulcrum point at 3:00 during the secondary hubbing impression, producing an arc-like displacement that radiates outward from that pivot. Design elements farther from the 3:00 position show greater displacement, while those near the pivot remain relatively unaffected — a diagnostic pattern that helps attributors confirm the class assignment. Notably, no significant die markers are reported on either side of this variety, meaning attribution depends primarily on the doubling characteristics themselves rather than supplementary surface features. The absence of distinctive die markers increases the attribution difficulty, since collectors must rely on the subtle geometry of the LIBERTY doubling alone to distinguish WDDO-002 from other varieties. This variety and WDDO-001 together represent the Wexler team's complete documented census of hub-doubled obverse dies for the 1987-D date, struck during the final era of multi-squeeze hubbing at the Denver Mint. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm, from the 1987-D mintage of 4,007,632,740 cents.
