1987 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-007WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

The stairs of the Memorial bend moderately under columns 5 to 8 on 1987D-1DER-007WS, and the fluting of column 3 extends into the stylobate below it. The direction is 180°, due south. That stair bending, where trails cross the steps and make them wavy, gives the WS suffix; the code also holds the 1987 Denver date, a 1 for the cent, DER for the reverse and file 007. TrailDies' coin is graded stage C and has several obverse markers: a small gouge right of the R in TRUST, a cluster of gouges beneath the E of LIBERTY, die wear forming between the letters of LIBERTY and damage on Lincoln's nose. On the reverse, small gouges gather in the N of CENT. Cal Goddard found the die. Wavy steps are generally attributed to polishing of the die with a rotary tool, though some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.

Die Markers

• Stage “C “, obverse is LDS – a small die gouge is seen to the right of the R in TRUST. A group of small die gouges is seen under the E of LIBERTY. Also notice the die deterioration forming between the letters of LIBERTY. Some die damage is seen on Lincoln’s nose.
• Reverse is LDS – a group of small die gouges is seen in the N of CENT.
