1987 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-004T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Although 1987D-1DER-004T ends in T for trails, its entry describes wavy-step features: trails crossing the Memorial's stairs and fluting so the steps look bent. The steps bend moderately under columns 5 through 9, most strongly on the left, and the fluting of columns 2 and 3 runs moderately down into the stylobate. TrailDies gives the direction as 180°, due south. The rest of the code is the 1987 Denver date, the cent's 1, DER for a reverse design extension and file 004. The coin was struck late in the dies' life (stage C), with a light scratch through the E of WE and a small gouge at the lower right of column 12. No finder is named. Trails like these are usually attributed to polishing of the die with a rotary buff; a minority view links them to the die moving against the hub.
