Description

1987D-1DER-003WS shows light step deviation under columns 5, 6 and 7, running at 180°, straight down the coin. In wavy-step dies like this, trails pass over the Memorial's stairs so their edges look bent rather than straight. The code joins 1987D, the 1 of a cent, DER for the reverse, serial number 003 and the WS wavy-step tag. Unlike its neighbor 002WS, TrailDies records no fluting extension here. TrailDies places it in the late die state, stage C. The obverse shows nothing, while the reverse has a gouge by the rim above the T of UNITED and three small gouges inside the O of ONE. No finder is named. Wavy steps are generally attributed to rotary polishing of the die, though some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
