1987 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-002WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Both effects on 1987D-1DER-002WS are light. The steps under columns 5 through 8 of the Memorial bend gently, and the fluting of column 3 extends a little way down into the stylobate. TrailDies gives the offset of the step bending as 180°, due south. WS in the code stands for wavy steps, the name for trails that cross the Memorial stairs and make them look rippled; 1987D is the Denver date, 1 the cent, DER the reverse side and 002 the file. The dies were well worn (stage C), with nothing noted on the obverse and, on the reverse, a gouge by the rim in the space separating the E from the N of CENT. No finder is named. Wavy steps are usually put down to polishing the die with a rotary tool, while some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
