1987 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-001WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

TrailDies' first wavy-step file for the 1987 Denver cent is 1987D-1DER-001WS: the year with Denver's D, the cent's 1, DER for the reverse, the opening file 001, and WS, short for wavy steps. Its stairs bend moderately below columns 5 to 8. Above them, the fluting lines of columns 2 and 10 just reach the stylobate, and those of column 11 go a little further. Everything runs at 180°, straight down the coin. The coin TrailDies describes is from late in the die's life; two tiny dots below the mint mark on the obverse and a gouge under the middle bar of the E in CENT identify the pair. As TrailDies and most specialists see it, trails come from polishing the die with a rotary buff; a minority links them to the die moving against the hub.
