1987 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DEO-002T Trail Die Obverse

Description

On 1987D-1DEO-002T, short, faint trails rise from the top of every letter of LIBERTY except the Y, at 340°, north-northwest, toward the upper left. The number starts with 1987D, the year and Denver mint, then gives the denomination as 1, the side as obverse (DEO), the file as 002 and the type as T, for trails. The coin was struck from worn dies (stage C). Die damage shows in two places: in the gap separating the 9 from the 8, and up and to the right of the D mint mark. No reverse markers are noted, and no finder is named. Trails are commonly attributed to polishing of the die with a rotary tool; some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
