1987-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

Documented as UVC-1019 and DMR-008, RPM-007 on the 1987-D Lincoln Memorial cent has all three die stages recorded with explicit obverse and reverse condition assessments: Stage A notes both sides at early die state, Stage B places both at mid-die state, and Stage C records the late die state. The parallel tracking of obverse and reverse condition through each stage indicates the cataloger examined both sides of the die pair at each progression point, providing a more complete picture of how the die pair aged together during its production run. This dual-sided stage documentation helps collectors estimate where their specimen falls in the die's service life, since a coin with an early-state obverse but mid-state reverse (or vice versa) would not cleanly fit any documented stage. The 1987-D date represents one of the final opportunities for traditional RPM collecting on Lincoln cents — as the Mint transitioned toward master dies with pre-applied mint marks in subsequent years, the hand-punching process that created repunched mint marks was gradually phased out, ending the mechanical conditions necessary for this variety type. Seven of thirteen cataloged RPMs now documented for 1987-D confirms the date's robust representation in this collecting specialty. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm, from the 1987-D mintage of 4,007,632,740 cents.
