Description
On 1986D-1DER-001WS the strongest feature is under column 10 of the Memorial, where its fluting lines run moderately down into the stylobate, the platform below the columns. The steps beneath columns 6, 7 and 8 bend lightly. That bending, where trails cross the stairs and make them look wavy, is what the WS (wavy steps) suffix means; the rest of the code is the 1986 Denver date, the cent's 1, the reverse code DER and file 001. The offset direction is 170°, just east of due south. On the stage B (middle-die-state) coin there is a small gouge at the bottom of bay 1 and a small dot on the upper right of column 12. Chuck Daughtrey of Florida found the die. Wavy steps, like other trails, are usually attributed to polishing of the die with a rotary tool, though some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
