1986-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-013

Description

Holding the distinction of CONECA RPM #1 — the very first repunched mint mark cataloged for 1986-D — WRPM-013 is classified as D/D South and also cross-referenced to Coppercoins 1986D-1MM-001. Two stages are documented: Stage A shows strong RPM doubling with a weak die gouge southwest of the 9 in the date. The reverse at Stage A reveals a die gouge right of G in the FG designer initials and another south of the first S in STATES. By Stage B, the RPM has weakened noticeably, the obverse gouge near the 9 is only faintly visible, a short vertical die crack has appeared on upper column 2, and the G die gouge has diminished. The emergence of a die crack in Stage B signals metal fatigue in the die steel. As CONECA's first-cataloged variety for the date, WRPM-013 holds historical priority within the 1986-D RPM series. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
