1986-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-010

Description

Unusual among the 1986-D RPM varieties for having its only confirmed die stage at the late end of the spectrum, RPM-010 documents Stage C at late die state (LDS) confirmed on both obverse and reverse, while stages A (EDS) and B (MDS) remain unconfirmed. This inverted confirmation pattern suggests the specimens with the clearest die marker evidence happened to come from late in the die's production run. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-1009 and DMR-011, RPM-010 presents an attribution challenge: late die state specimens typically show accumulated wear that can obscure diagnostics. That the LDS stage nonetheless achieved confirmed status speaks to the clarity of markers on the examined specimen. Collectors who locate early or mid-die state examples could significantly strengthen the attribution record. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams and 19mm from the 1986 Denver mintage of 4,442,866,698 cents.
