1986 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Assigned VarietyVista identifiers UVC-1001 and DMR-003, RPM-002 on the 1986-D Lincoln Memorial cent is documented at early-to-mid die state (EMDS) — a transitional classification indicating the examined specimen falls between early and mid-die state categories. The EMDS designation suggests the die had seen moderate use, enough to develop initial wear patterns but not yet showing the pronounced deterioration of later stages. Repunched mint marks on 1986-D Lincoln cents represent some of the final years of hand-punched mint marks in the Lincoln cent series: the Denver Mint applied individual D punch impressions to working dies, and corrections to misaligned initial punches created the doubled mint mark images that RPM collectors seek. The sequential UVC numbering (1001 following RPM-001's 1000) indicates these varieties were cataloged in order within the VarietyVista system. Cherry-pickers should examine the area immediately surrounding the D mint mark under magnification, looking for traces of a secondary impression displaced from the primary punch — the direction and extent of this displacement define the variety's character.
