1969-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Before mint marks were engraved directly into the master die, individual working dies received their mint marks by hand-punching, and any misalignment between successive punches created the repunched mintmark varieties that RPM collectors pursue. RPM-001 on the 1969-D Kennedy Half Dollar shows a D/D Tilted—the Denver mint mark punched at a tilted angle relative to its original position, producing visible remnants of the first impression alongside the final placement. The obverse die variety is ODV-002a (MDO), indicating a misplaced date obverse variant accompanies the repunched mint mark on this die. Denver Mint regular strike. The 1969-D Kennedy Half Dollar belongs to the silver-clad era (1965-1970), when half dollars retained 40% silver content while dimes and quarters had already transitioned to copper-nickel clad. This RPM is the first cataloged repunched mintmark for the date, and the combination of a tilted D/D with a misplaced date obverse variant creates a die carrying multiple attribution-worthy features on a single coin.
