1969-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005
Error
Description
The fifth doubled die obverse cataloged for the 1969-D Kennedy Half Dollar, WDDO-005 exhibits a clockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately the 1 o'clock position, with doubling visible on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and the TY of LIBERTY. This clockwise pivoted doubling is classified as Class V in the Wexler system — where the hub and die were slightly rotated relative to each other during one of the hubbing impressions, creating spread that radiates outward from the pivot point. Elements closer to the 1 o'clock pivot show minimal or no doubling, while elements further away (like the date at 7 o'clock) display progressively wider separation. Obverse die markers include heavily polished hair around the R of LIBERTY, while the reverse shows a short die gouge extending north from the top of the second S in STATES. The 1969-D is part of the 40% silver clad Kennedy Half Dollar series (1965-1970), containing an outer layer of 80% silver and 20% copper bonded to an inner core of approximately 21% silver and 79% copper, totaling 40% silver overall at 11.50 grams. The Denver Mint struck 129,881,800 half dollars in 1969. Cataloged by the Wexler team. Examine IGWT, the date, and TY under magnification for the clockwise spread radiating from the 1 o'clock pivot.
