1968 (S) Proof Roosevelt Dime - Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-516 and DMR-007 and cross-referenced as FS-502, this 1968 San Francisco proof Roosevelt dime carries the primary RPM listing for the date, showing an S/S repunched mintmark shifted to the west. The obverse is additionally listed as DDO-005, creating a dual-attribution variety combining both a repunched mintmark and a doubled die obverse on a single proof coin. The 1968-S proof dime marked the return of proof coinage after the 1965-1967 suspension, when proof production resumed exclusively at San Francisco. The FS-502 Fivaz-Stanton designation confirms this variety's recognition in major attributing references, placing it among the most widely known Roosevelt dime RPMs. First-year-back proof dies underwent new production procedures as San Francisco reestablished its proof coining operations, and the combination of a repunched mintmark with a doubled die obverse on a proof issue creates a particularly desirable dual-feature variety. The westward S displacement provides the quickest initial diagnostic before examining the obverse for DDO-005 characteristics.
