Description

The 1968-S Proof Roosevelt Dime WDDR-003, attributed by the Wexler team under Variety ID 1968-S 10¢ Pr WDDR-003, displays a strong clockwise spread on the reverse. The affected elements include UNITED STATES, ONE DIME, E PLUR of E PLURIBUS, the olive branch, the torch flames, and the M of UNUM. The variety is found on the Type 1 reverse. Obverse die markers are also present and serve as additional attribution points. The 1968-S Roosevelt Dime is a clad coin — the switch from 90% silver to copper-nickel clad occurred in 1965 for dimes and quarters. The San Francisco Mint produced proof-only Roosevelt Dimes from 1968 onward following the suspension of proof set production from 1965 through 1967. The clockwise geometry of the WDDR-003 spread produces particularly legible displacement on the paired lettering of UNITED STATES and ONE DIME, where the doubled impressions are visible on both the outer and inner edges of the letters under moderate magnification. Die Markers: Obverse: A small die gouge touches the upper left side of the Y in LIBERTY. Two die scratches extend southwest from the lower right 1st A in AMERICA. A small die gouge can be found to the left of the top of the 1st flame on the left of the top of the torch. A die gouge can be found above the top right side of the C in AMERICA.
