1968-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003
Error
Description
Strong extra thickness on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials, and the date defines WDDO-003 of the 1968-S Proof Roosevelt Dime, making it a multi-element variety with consistent strong doubling across four obverse design zones. Notably, the specimen examined also displayed mechanical doubling on the date, which is a separate phenomenon from the hub doubling that constitutes the cataloged variety. Mechanical doubling results from die bounce during striking and produces flat, shelf-like displacement lacking the rounded profile of true hub doubling. The presence of both on the same coin demonstrates these are independent events. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1968-S 10c Pr WDDO-003. Reverse die markers include a short vertical die scratch to the right of the N in ONE. The 1968-S Proof Roosevelt Dime marks the resumption of proof production at San Francisco after the 1965-1967 hiatus when Special Mint Sets replaced proof sets. Struck in copper-nickel clad for annual proof sets, this proof Roosevelt Dime documents strong hub doubling across LIBERTY, motto, initials, and date on an early post-hiatus San Francisco proof issue.
