1988 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Transitional Reverse Design WTRD-004

Description

1988-D WTRD-004 is a transitional reverse design on the 1988-D Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as a 1988-D Lincoln cent struck with the 1989 reverse design. On the obverse, a series of gouges lies over the D in GOD, and another gouge sits left of the upper part of that D. From the upper right of TRUST's U, a scratch runs north to the rim, and gouges lie to the right of the upper part of TRUST's second T. A diagonal scratch sits SE of Lincoln's eye, a run of light diagonal scratches lies under his ear, and a short scratch reaches east from his upper lip. On the reverse, a short vertical scratch lies between the lower parts of the I and T in UNITED. From the upper E in UNITED, two scratches reach the rim, and a possible small gouge (dot) sits inside that E's upper opening. A scratch reaches the rim from the upper left of AMERICA's M, a gouge lies under the M's lower right opening, and a vertical gouge sits left of the upper part of the last A in AMERICA. Joseph Koelling submitted the variety, with updated photos and markers taken from a coin supplied by John Shields. Crawford lists it as CTRD-003.
