1940 Proof Jefferson Nickel - Reverse of 1938 - Transitional Reverse Design WTRD-001

Description

1940 WTRD-001 is a transitional reverse design on the 1940 proof Jefferson nickel, cataloged by the Wexler team. This 1940 nickel carries the 1938 reverse design, the version with weak, wavy steps. On the obverse, many abrading die scratches run mostly north to south on the lower queue, others run mostly WSW to ENE on the lower bust, and rotational scratches appear on the face, cheek, hair and collar. Wexler lists the reverse as a Class II doubled die, 1940 WDDR-004, with a spread toward the rim on E PLURIBUS UNUM. The small left window has a small die gouge (dot) low inside it; left of the semicircle that sits over the two center columns is a curving SW-to-NE scratch; beside the first column's lower part, on the right, is a short diagonal gouge; small gouges sit just under the second column; between the two right windows, scratches twist in a mostly north-south direction; and from Monticello's upper left, a scratch heads NNE out to the rim. Joseph Koelling submitted the variety. Its Cherrypickers number is FS-05-1940-901 (024), and Breen lists it as #2670.
