1964-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-012
Error
Description
Twelfth documented doubled die obverse for the 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar, WDDO-012 belongs to a series of DDOs produced during Denver's highest-pressure half dollar production year. The unprecedented public demand for Kennedy Half Dollars in 1964 led both mints to operate at capacity, with Denver alone striking over 156 million pieces in the original 90% silver composition. Under these conditions, hub impression quality control was compressed, and dies bearing subtle doubling were more likely to be placed into service without detection. Roberts' detailed portrait, with its textured hair, ear anatomy, and collar detail, offers multiple zones where hub misalignment creates identifiable displacement. No specific die markers have been recorded for WDDO-012. Cross-referenced under the Wexler system as 1964-D 50¢ WDDO-012. The Wexler Team attributed this variety. As the twelfth entry in the sequence, WDDO-012 demonstrates that Denver's 1964 hub operations generated DDO events at a rate consistent with the facility's extraordinary production tempo.
