Description

Fourth in the sequence of Denver-minted 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar doubled die obverses, WDDO-004 was among the earlier documented DDOs from this prolific date. Kennedy Half Dollar collecting exploded immediately after the coin's release in March 1964, with the public hoarding specimens in unprecedented quantities. Denver contributed over 156 million pieces to meet demand, and the speed of die production meant that hubbing errors escaped detection more readily than under normal operating conditions. Gilroy Roberts' portrait captures Kennedy's likeness with sculptural precision, and the design's multiple text elements, from LIBERTY to IN GOD WE TRUST to the date, offer numerous reference points where doubling can be measured and classified. No specific die markers have been recorded. Wexler Variety ID: 1964-D 50¢ WDDO-004 serves as the primary cross-reference, with no competing catalog identifiers established by other attribution services.
