Description
DDO-005, which Wexler numbers WDDO-005, is a doubled die obverse on the 1964-D Kennedy half dollar with a strong tripled spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, LIBERTY and the hair at the back of Kennedy's head. Both catalogs give it the Cherrypickers number FS-105, which Wexler writes as FS-50-1964D-105 (013.6). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties calls it a strong Class II tripling with the spread toward the center, visible on the RTY of LIBERTY, on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date and the designer's initials, and on Kennedy's hair at the top and back of his head. On the obverse a die scratch runs NNW to SSE just left of the lips. On the reverse the G of the designer's initials FG is flanged, and a horizontal die gouge joins the N and I of UNITED at their centers. Lou Coles submitted the coin, and CONECA lists the die as 5-O-II. VarietyVista credits Bill Fivaz with the report and records the triple spread as strong on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the TY of LIBERTY and the hair behind the head. It notes that the reverse is its design variety RDV-002 (Flared G) and follows the die under marker codes UVC-045 and DMR-007. In stage A, an early die state, a heavy die scratch lies in the field at the lips and a die gouge links the NI of UNITED on the reverse. Stage B, a middle die state, is unconfirmed, and in stage C both sides are in a late die state.
